Nominations for the 2020 #MyAdelaide City Awards open

For Have You Met Charlie? store owner Lauren Harper, winning two City Awards helped her decide to take a “leap of faith” and expand her Regent Arcade business.

Ms Harper, who won the Best Small Retailer category in 2019 and Best Customer Service Experience title the year before, decided it was time to “be bold” and open a second shop in Brighton.

She said the City Awards helped her attract new customers.

“We were able to open up to another demographic … so the (awards) are great for city retailers,” Ms Harper said. “And they give people the opportunity to learn about businesses they might not know about”.

The #MyAdelaide City Awards are back this year to celebrate the best in the CBD and North Adelaide.

Residents, shoppers and traders can nominate in 11 categories, with new categories highlighting businesses that have found new ways to connect with customers in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adelaide Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor encouraged people to recognise “extraordinary businesses”.

Nominations open on August 19, and winners will be announced on October 21.

The categories are:

  • Best Coffee Spot
  • Best New Business (operating under 18 months)
  • Best Small Retailer
  • Best Dining Experience
  • Best Attraction or Experience
  • Best Hair & Beauty
  • Best Health & Wellbeing
  • Best Small Bar
  • Rediscover Award (‘rediscover old faithfuls’/hall of fame)
